One year ago today I was leaving for a 7 day stint on the Magnetawan. I remember what I wrote in my log, too: “What better way to spend a summer than to explore this beautiful country inch by inch.” It’s Canada day, and instead of watching a parade or fireworks, we are riding a train for thous

ands of kilometers north. Who knew you could take a 22 hour train ride and not even be out of the Province. Bill, Mackie and I have been working at a steady pace for the last week or so to get this behemoth underway. We have everything packed now and are sitting in the grass with all our gear outside Washago Station. We already have our shirts off, and the boys are already asking questions about my rat-heroin experiments. Mackie is enthusiastically telling the buys he can’t wait to beat them each up individually. Bill just offered the boys some chips and then revoked his offer. We are all laughing – trip is going to be great.
